Guyanese President Irfaan Ali on Thursday dissolved the 12th Parliament and all Regional Democratic Councils, setting September 1, 2025, as the date for the country’s general and regional elections.

The move, made in accordance with Articles 72 (1) and 73(2) of the Constitution of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, was formalised with the signing of the two proclamations.

“Free and fair elections are the lifeblood of a democratic state,” Ali said in a statement. “The upcoming elections represent our country’s commitment to renewing the democratic covenant between its citizens and government.”

Ali urged all eligible Guyanese to vote and expressed confidence in the Guyana Elections Commission’s ability to deliver a free, fair, and credible process. He also called on citizens to support the work of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).

“Elections provide the opportunity for citizens to exercise their democratic right to elect their president and representatives of the National Assembly,” he said.

The September polls will determine the composition of Guyana’s next National Assembly, Regional Democratic Councils, and the presidency.
