Narayan Sikandar, the driver of motorcar PMM 3778, died this morning while undergoing surgery at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), following a three-vehicle collision on the Rupert Craig Highway.

The accident, which occurred around 09:00 hrs on Tuesday, in the vicinity of the University of Guyana (UG) Access Road, has since been reclassified from a “serious accident” to a “fatal accident.” His body is now at the GPHC mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.

The accident involved hire car HD 3223, owned and driven by 63-year-old Neil Lewis of Sisters Village, East Bank Berbice (with two male passengers); motorcar PAK 9877, owned and driven by Kamel Daniels; and Sikandar’s motorcar PMM 3778.

Police investigations revealed that Daniels was driving east along the northern drive lane of the highway at a fast rate when, near the UG Access Road, he lost control of his vehicle. It swerved south across the concrete median and collided with the right side of Sikandar’s car, which was heading west on the southern carriageway. The impact pushed Sikandar’s car into the path of Lewis’s westbound hire car, resulting in a second collision.

All three vehicles sustained extensive damage. The three drivers and two male occupants were injured and taken to GPHC by public-spirited citizens. Sikandar, who had suffered a fractured right arm, was admitted in serious condition and later died during surgery. The other individuals were treated for chest pains and facial lacerations and are reported to be in stable condition.

Police investigations are ongoing.
