GDF, Brazilian military conduct joint patrols to strengthen border security

The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and the Brazilian Armed Forces have completed joint international patrols in the border areas near Lethem and Bonfim, as well as in Kanapang, Pakaraima Region, aimed at boosting cross-border security and cooperation.

According to a GDF release, the simultaneous patrols were coordinated to enhance real-time collaboration and mutual visibility between the two forces, improving situational awareness and operational readiness. The joint exercise included patrols across air, river, and land domains.

The operation involved multi-agency support, including the Guyana Police Force and the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission, and focused on deterring illicit cross-border activity, strengthening surveillance, and improving inter-operability between the two countries’ security forces.

As part of the engagement, delegations from both countries met beneath the national flags of Guyana and Brazil at the Takutu Bridge. The Guyanese team was led by Lieutenant Colonel Dominic Shepherd, Commanding Officer of the 3 Infantry Battalion, and included former battalion commander Lieutenant Colonel John Mohanlall. The Brazilian delegation was headed by General de Brigada (Major General) Luciano Bortoluzzi Garcia, Commander of the 1st Jungle Infantry Brigade, along with senior officers from the Battalion and Special Border Platoon.

The operation reaffirmed both countries’ commitment to ongoing defence cooperation and cross-border collaboration, the release concluded.
