Public servants will be paid the 2025 retroactive salary before the September 1 Regional and General Elections, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo said on Thursday.

Speaking at his weekly press briefing at Freedom House, Dr. Jagdeo said he is hoping that Senior Minister in the Office of the President with Responsibility for Finance and Public Service, Dr. Ashni Singh, has systems in place to facilitate the payment.

President Dr. Irfaan Ali, in December last year, announced a 10 per cent retroactive salary increase for all public servants for that year, and an eight per cent increase for 2025.

The announcement was part of a two-year agreement to be formalised between the government and the Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU).

It forms part of a series of measures introduced by the government since August 2020 to enhance disposable incomes for Guyanese. These measures include a seven per cent across-the-board increase in 2021, an eight per cent retroactive increase in 2022, and a 6.5 per cent increase in 2023.
