The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has taken a major step towards modern, less-lethal policing with the launch of its first-ever Taser Certification Course.

The three-day training programme, which began on Thursday at the Officers’ Training Centre, is being conducted in collaboration with the Guyana Prison Service, the Amethyst School of Martial Arts, and the Security Training Academy.

The initiative marks a significant shift in the GPF’s approach to public safety — emphasising de-escalation and controlled use of force through the adoption of Conducted Energy Weapons (CEWs), including the TX200P taser model, and the integration of Body-Worn Camera (BWC) systems.

Deputy Superintendent London chaired the opening ceremony, introducing Assistant Director of Prisons, Kevin Pilgrim, who described the initiative as more than a routine drill.

“This is a full CEW Operator Certification Course,” Pilgrim explained. “It ensures that officers operate within legal and ethical boundaries, especially as we approach a period of heightened public activity and potential unrest during the elections.”

Pilgrim stressed that tasers are to be used only on non-compliant individuals, underscoring the importance of adhering to strict use-of-force protocols and safeguarding citizens’ rights.

Deputy Commissioner and Region 4A Commander, Simon McBean, praised the programme, noting its historic importance:

“This is the first time we are introducing a structured, non-lethal response model within the Guyana Police Force. It’s a progressive move that aligns with international standards in modern law enforcement,” he said. He encouraged officers to fully engage with the training, assuring them that successful participants will be officially certified.

Also present was Colonel Souvenir, Chairman of the Joint Services Training Committee, who highlighted the evolving nature of security work.

“Change is not optional — it’s necessary. Embracing less-lethal tools like tasers is about being more accountable, more efficient, and more in tune with public expectations of policing,” he stated.

The course includes both theoretical instruction and hands-on exercises designed to enhance operational readiness while promoting accountability and professionalism. It also equips officers with tools that enable effective, non-lethal responses during high-stakes events such as elections, where crowd control and de-escalation are crucial.

This training initiative reflects the GPF’s broader commitment to strengthening public trust, reducing the risk of excessive force, and modernising its law enforcement strategies to better serve all Guyanese.

The Taser Certification Course continues through 21 June and is expected to produce a trained and certified group of officers equipped for the challenges of modern policing in a democratic society.
