The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) is promising fireworks on the track and in the field as excitement builds for this year’s Senior National Championships, set to take place from June 27 to 29 at the National Track and Field Centre in Leonora.
Billed as one of the most eagerly anticipated editions in recent memory, the three-day championship is expected to attract a strong turnout of athletes and spectators alike.
AAG Executive Niall Stanton expressed enthusiasm about the event, emphasising the extensive planning and support that have gone into making it a success.
“This is going to be one of our best events. A lot of logistics are already in place, and we’ve received tremendous sponsorship support from various companies,” Stanton shared. The event is being coordinated by AAG Council Member Major Tyrone Smith.
This year’s championships will not only spotlight Guyana’s top senior athletes but also feature international competitors—adding a new level of intensity and excitement to the competition.
Among the marquee events is the men’s 100m dash, expected to deliver fireworks as local sprint stars Knollex Holder, Akim Stroot, Emmanuel Archibald, and Daniel Williams go head-to-head. “The 100 meters is going to be electric. We have several athletes looking to assert their dominance,” Stanton added.
In the field, the javelin throw promises high drama as long-time champion Leslain Baird looks to defend his title. “The big question is, will this be the year we see a new javelin champion? There’s only one way to find out—you have to be there,” Stanton teased.
The AAG is extending an open invitation to all track and field fans to witness what it promises will be a spectacular event. “The atmosphere is going to be amazing,” Stanton said. “We’re inviting everyone to come out and support our athletes. It’s only $500 to get into the stadium—a small price for a big show.”
With top-tier competition, potential upsets, and a vibrant atmosphere expected, the 2024 Senior National Championships is shaping up to be a must-see event on Guyana’s sporting calendar.
