A public social media post detailing years of alleged domestic abuse has led to swift action by both the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security and the Guyana Police Force.

The post, shared by Joanna Ramoutar, describes six years of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse allegedly at the hands of Karran Sukhan. Following the post’s circulation, Sukhan was arrested in Police Division Five and has been formally arraigned.

The Ministry of Human Services and Social Security has since stepped in to provide direct support to Ms. Ramoutar through its Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Policy Unit.

“When we became aware of it, we intervened immediately,” said Minister Dr. Vindhya Persaud. “Our Probation Department and the head of our Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Unit were in contact with the young woman. She is currently safe and will continue to receive our full support.”

According to the ministry, Ms. Ramoutar is now accessing a range of services including counseling, psychosocial care, and legal representation, as part of the ministry’s comprehensive support approach for survivors of gender-based violence.

“We offer legal, psychosocial, and socio-economic support,” Minister Persaud added. “Every survivor deserves to know these services are available to them — and that they are not alone.”

The Guyana Police Force has confirmed that a formal statement was taken from Ms. Ramoutar, along with a supporting medical report. The matter remains under active investigation.

The ministry is also urging the public to utilise existing tools and services designed to help survivors, such as the 914 emergency hotline, the iMatter app, and Open Justice Centres across the country.

“We are training police officers, visiting stations, and ensuring every officer knows how to respond to these cases with urgency and sensitivity,” said Minister Persaud. “Survivors must be treated with dignity — and justice must be accessible.”

As investigations continue, the ministry reiterated its commitment to a zero-tolerance approach to domestic violence and encouraged anyone affected to seek help.
