The new Diamond Regional Hospital, a state-of-the-art medical facility on the East Bank of Demerara, was commissioned today as part of a national push to improve healthcare access outside the capital.

The hospital is the first of six regional facilities under construction, aimed at decentralising health services and easing pressure on Georgetown’s referral hospitals.

A scene at the commissioning

The original hospital was commissioned in 2007, but in recent years, the demand for improved services and greater capacity became a central issue. These discussions led to the building of the new Diamond Hospital. The new facility is equipped with 75 inpatient beds and modern medical equipment to support critical and specialised care.

Designed to serve residents of Diamond and neighbouring communities, the hospital offers 24-hour emergency care, inpatient and outpatient services, general surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, orthopaedics, and a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). It also features three operating theatres and diagnostic capabilities, including digital X-ray and laboratory services.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, President Irfaan Ali said the hospital meets international healthcare benchmarks, including standards set by Chinese, British, and American systems. He stated that the investment reflects the government’s commitment to delivering high-quality healthcare across the country.

Construction of five additional regional hospitals is currently underway in Enmore, De Kinderen, Bath, No. 75 Village, and Anna Regina.
