Leader of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), Aubrey Norton, said he is not concerned about persons leaving the party but has faith in those committed to serving citizens.
He spoke with Ignite News following recent statements by Region Four Chairman and party representative Daniel Seeram, who publicly announced his endorsement of President Dr. Irfaan Ali and Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo for a second term in office.
Norton said that Seeram’s move will not affect the party, as he has not played any meaningful role in the PNCR for over two years now.
“Mr. Seeram is not an executive member of the PNCR,” Norton stated. “Mr. Seeram was fortunate that President Granger decided that he was going to make him chairman of the region and I think he has mishandled the region. I don’t think he has shown any commitment to the PNC over the years and so it might be a blessing in disguise that he goes.”
The Opposition Leader said that his party will once again win Region Four in the upcoming elections and will put in place people who are committed to serving citizens.
He said that Seeram has not been involved in the party’s affairs and has operated as if he is an “appendage” of the People’s Progressive Party for more than two years now.
He said it had become clear for some time now that persons who were fortunate to be given positions in the past were headed in a particular direction.
“Political parties make mistakes and one of the mistakes I find in our party — which we will rectify — when you get government people to gravitate towards you and then you find out later it has nothing to do with commitment toward the people. And so that’s an error we will correct moving forward.”
Seeram said on Tuesday that, after fruitful discussions and careful considerations on matters of national and regional development, he has decided to back the PPP/C leadership. His endorsement comes just days after September 1 was announced as the official date for general and regional elections.
