Indian expertise welcomed to support Guyana’s development agenda

Guyana has opened its arms to India and Indian nationals to support the country’s massive development agenda, which spans from infrastructural development to healthcare.
Indian parliamentarian Dr. Shashi Tharoor made this announcement following a productive engagement with Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo earlier this week.

“There are tremendous infrastructural changes happening, everything from highway construction to reforming the banking sector, telecoms, all sorts of areas. And there was a very clear signal that India will be welcomed and Indians will be welcomed to participate in this process,” Dr Tharoor said.
He added: “There was an open invitation for Indians to come and participate in projects but to bring Indian workers who are welcomed to stay and work because there is a small population here, just about three quarters of a million and for them, labour shortages have already begun. It is a very exciting moment of history in Guyana.”

Dr. Tharoor was part of a cross-party Indian delegation in Guyana as part of “Operation Sindoor,” a diplomatic initiative aimed at strengthening global partnerships and countering terrorism narratives.
Dr. Jagdeo had earlier said that Guyana stands unequivocally with India in its fight against terrorism.
“It was an excellent visit and I assure the delegation that Guyana stands unequivocally with India. We are against terrorism and we believe that all those who perpetuate terroristic acts must be brought to justice,” he said, following a meeting with Dr Tharoor and his team.

During their visit, the Indian delegation met with President Dr. Irfaan Ali and Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips. They also attended Guyana’s Independence celebrations, visited the Indian Monument Gardens and the Mahatma Gandhi Monument in the Promenade Gardens in the capital, and engaged with the local media.
Operation Sindoor involves seven multi-party delegations comprising 59 members traveling to 32 countries. The initiative is part of India’s global diplomatic outreach to build stronger alliances on key international issues, including climate resilience, development, and counter-terrorism.
