Young Officer Cadet makes history as first woman to gain prestigious Sandhurst selection Eighteen-year-old Officer Cadet Fianna Maria Tading has made history as the first woman in the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) to be selected for training at the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom. Tading, who is five months into the GDF’s Standard Officer Course #58 earned the opportunity through her excellent performance during the rigorous officer training programme. For the young cadet, the historic achievement represents both a personal milestone and an important step towards her goal of becoming a military officer. “The opportunity was unexpected, but I am extremely grateful. I see it as an important step towards becoming a military officer. I intend to give my best, learn as much as I can and return better prepared to serve the GDF and share what I have learnt,” she said. Originally from Moruca, Region One (Barima-Waini), and now living at Strathspey, East Coast Demerara, Tading attended Bladen Hall Multilateral School. She says her decision to pursue a military career was influenced by a teacher who recognised her potential and encouraged her to apply for the Standard Officer Course. Tading said her determination is also shaped by her upbringing and her desire to create better opportunities for herself and her sisters. “Life was a bit tough for us growing up, and I always wanted a better future for myself and my sisters. When I learnt how challenging the officer course was, I decided that it was a challenge I wanted to take on,” she said. As she prepares for the next stage of her military development in the United Kingdom, Tading hopes her achievement will inspire more young Guyanese, especially women, to consider serving in the GDF. She encouraged young people who are willing to work hard to challenge themselves and serve Guyana by considering a career in the GDF.

Works on the US$192 million East Coast Road Expansion Project are on track for its October completion deadline, with only five residents remaining to be relocated.

During a site visit last Friday, Minister Edghill met with the five families between Haslington and Victoria who are yet to relocate. The Minister encouraged their continued cooperation to avoid any delays to the construction timeline.

He noted that 108 individuals from Enmore to Belfield have already signed, settled, and collected their compensation, based on calculations provided by the consultant, in order to facilitate relocation for the project. Only one person is yet to complete this process.

The project is being undertaken by China Railway First Group Co. Limited, which is working in segments to enable simultaneous construction across various sections and accelerate overall progress.

Earlier, the company had to temporarily halt works along the Plaisance to Bee Hive stretch on the East Coast of Demerara, due to the need to carry out works in areas where homes and businesses were erected.

The Ministry of Public Works subsequently intervened to facilitate the removal of these structures and the relocation of affected residents.
