Earth Day celebrated with environmental restoration at Baracara Falls

In recognition of Earth Day 2025, Ride Along GY, with invaluable support from the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) and the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG), successfully led an environmental clean-up and restoration effort at the scenic Baracara Falls, located up the Mazaruni River from Bartica.

According to a release, the initiative involved clearing the surrounding areas and removing two large fallen trees that were obstructing more than half of the waterfall’s flow. This revitalisation of Baracara Falls has restored its natural rhythm, improved visitor safety, and enhanced the overall experience of this breathtaking eco-tourism site.

Cherry-Ann Greene, Founder of Ride Along GY and a current final-year student at the University of Malta, pursuing a Diploma in Climate-Friendly Travel, expressed her vision for sustainable tourism in Guyana:

“Earth Day is more than a celebration—it’s a call to action. Through this initiative, we are preserving a beautiful natural site, empowering local tourism, and encouraging climate-friendly travel in Guyana. We are grateful to the GTA and THAG for their generous sponsorship and shared vision for a greener future.”

Greene, the release noted, is also working towards launching the Climate Friendly Travel (CFT) Club in Guyana—an initiative inspired by her studies and guided by the SUNx Malta vision for climate resilience in tourism. The club will promote sustainable travel practices, community engagement, and support for cross-sector partnerships that align with Guyana’s green agenda.

This Earth Day marks another important step towards shaping a cleaner, more climate-conscious future for tourism in Guyana. Guided by this year’s theme, ‘Our Power, Our Planet’, the GTA and THAG will continue to champion initiatives that protect our natural attractions while empowering grassroots tourism enterprises, the release concluded.
