A quantity of suspected counterfeit United States currency was recently seized by customs officers attached to the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA).
In a statement issued today, the GRA said that 500 replicas of US $100 bills were confiscated from an incoming package at a popular cargo bond at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) in Timehri.
The suspected counterfeit bills bore all the usual trademarks of genuine currency, along with some additional markings.
“The relevant authorities, both in Guyana and overseas, were notified for further investigation in keeping with the provisions of the Customs and Anti-Money Laundering Acts. Investigations are ongoing,” the GRA stated in the release.
The authority also noted an alarming trend in smuggling attempts involving items such as gold, monetary instruments, firearms, and narcotics through Guyana’s ports.
As such, the GRA reiterated its call for individuals to desist from such illegal activities or face the consequences of their actions.
The public is also encouraged to report any illicit, unlawful, or smuggling activities by calling the following telephone numbers: 227-6060, extensions 3201, 3204, 3205, 3206, 3211, 3212, or 3408. The GRA assured that all information provided will be treated with the strictest confidentiality.
