The National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) 2025 began today, with students sitting English Papers I and II in the morning and Science Papers I and II in the afternoon.
The NGSA is a standardised examination in Guyana used to determine the placement of students in secondary schools. It assesses students in English Language, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.
Education Minister, Priya Manickchand, in a message, reassured all students sitting the examination that they will receive the same level of education regardless of the school they are placed in. She encouraged them to put their best foot forward and not to place pressure on themselves.
“I want you to know that you have all of our love, all our support, and a commitment by us that it doesn’t matter which school you get — you will be able to do well at that school because we are making the same investments in every school, regarding infrastructure, textbooks, trained teachers, labs, equipment in the labs, and so on,” Manickchand said.
She added: “What I want you to do… is to go into your assessments with the full confidence that you will write what you know and that, whatever happens, you will be fine. We are going to look after you in secondary school, with varied options for how you can continue your education and what subjects you can pursue. This is a beautiful time. Do not be nervous, do not be afraid, do not be worried. This is just another stage to get into high school — and you are all getting into high school; nobody fails this exam. It’s a placement exam.”
The NGSA is a crucial step in Guyana’s education system, marking the transition from primary to secondary school.
The assessment concludes tomorrow with Mathematics Papers I & II in the morning and Social Studies Papers I & II in the afternoon.
