The expansion of the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) is on track for completion no later than April 20th, according to Public Works Minister, Bishop Juan Edghill, who visited and inspected the ongoing works on Tuesday.
The minister made this disclosure during a meeting with contractors, airport engineers, and CJIA’s Chief Executive Officer, Ramesh Ghir, as reported by the Department of Public Information (DPI).
Minister Edghill highlighted that all components of the expansion are progressing on schedule, including the final stage of negotiations for the Terminal Two contract. The commercial centre is currently 80 per cent complete, with significant progress made on both the first and ground floors.
Furthermore, the contractor for the executive lounge has been approved to proceed with civil works.
The minister also revealed that a separate contract for the construction of airline services, which was previously removed from the main project, has recently gone out to tender and will be awarded soon.
CJIA’s expansion projects include the construction of a new commercial centre, a VIP lounge, upgraded tarmac and aircraft parking areas, administrative offices, and an improved baggage handling facility.
These upgrades to the country’s main airport are designed to accommodate the growing number of tourists and cargo transiting through Guyana and to facilitate the arrival of larger aircraft and new airlines as the country’s eco-tourism sector continues to expand.
Minister Edghill noted that the president’s projection of one million arrivals into Guyana became a reality in 2024, with continued growth expected in 2025 for both passenger and cargo traffic.
