The Government of Guyana will soon launch and begin distributing the $100,000 cash grants allocated for newborn babies, announced Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo.

Speaking at his weekly press conference on Thursday, Dr. Jagdeo stated that while he will leave the official announcement to President Dr. Irfaan Ali, the programme is on track.

He also confirmed that the initiative will be retroactive, meaning all babies born from January 1, 2025, will be eligible for the cash grant.

To ensure every eligible child receives the grant, the government has been tracking the number of babies born since January 1, regardless of their place of birth.

“We have the numbers. The President told me how many there are already, so they’re going to receive it retroactively,” the Vice President stated.

He emphasised that the process should be simple and hassle-free, ensuring that parents receive the funds as soon as possible, potentially even the day after the child is born.

In Budget 2025, the government allocated $1.3 billion to provide a one-time $100,000 cash grant to each child born to a Guyanese mother.
