Eight Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) in Region Six were presented with mini-excavators today, handed over by Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha.
Information from the Agriculture Ministry revealed that the eight excavators represent an investment of approximately $112 million.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Minister Mustapha stated that, in recognising the important role of the NDCs, President Dr. Irfaan Ali and Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo have instructed that all NDCs in Guyana be equipped with a mini-excavator to assist with clearing and maintaining community drainage channels.
He added that this initiative forms part of the government’s efforts to empower NDCs across the country.
Minister Mustapha further emphasised the importance of these machines in advancing the development of comprehensive drainage systems to withstand the impacts of climate change.
He also noted that this initiative is part of the government’s broader efforts to modernise and strengthen the country’s drainage infrastructure, ensuring greater resilience against flooding.
According to the Agriculture Ministry, all 22 Local Authority Areas in Region Six now have mini-excavators to maintain internal drainage channels in their respective communities.
