The General Secretariat of the Organisation of American States (OAS) has strongly condemned acts of intimidation committed by the Venezuelan coast guard against Guyana, and has reaffirmed its “steadfast support” for the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
A statement from the OAS today, said that it unequivocally condemned Venezuela’s use of its naval vessels to threaten ExxonMobil’s FPSO units operating within Guyana’s internationally recognised maritime territory.
“Such acts of intimidation constitute a clear violation of international law, undermine regional stability, and threaten the principles of peaceful coexistence between nations,” the Organisation stated.
The regional body has urged restraint by the Venezuelan regime; that they adhere to and respect the ongoing international legal processes, including the adjudication of the territorial dispute before the International Court of Justice.
The Organisation emphasised that “any attempt to use coercion or force to alter established borders is unacceptable and contrary to the fundamental principles of the OAS Charter and international law in general.”
It urged that the Venezuelan government immediately cease all aggressive maneuvers that could escalate tensions in the region.
The body called on the international community to remain vigilant and to stand in defense of the rule of law and regional security.
