Six Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) along the East Bank of Demerara were presented with mini-excavators today, handed over by Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha.

The NDCs that benefited include Eccles/Ramsburg, Mocha/Arcadia, Little Diamond/Herstelling, Soesdyke/Hui’s Te/Coverden, and Hauraruni/Yarrowkabra.

According to the Agriculture Ministry, the excavators represent an investment of approximately $96 million.

During the simple handing-over ceremony, Minister Mustapha highlighted that President Dr. Irfaan Ali and Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, recognising the role of the NDCs in Guyana, had instructed that they be equipped with mini-excavators to assist with clearing and maintaining community drainage channels. This, he added, forms part of the government’s efforts to empower NDCs across the country.

Mustapha emphasised the importance of these machines in advancing the development of comprehensive drainage systems to withstand the impacts of climate change. He further noted that the initiative is part of the government’s broader efforts to modernise and strengthen the country’s drainage infrastructure, ensuring better resilience against flooding.

Local Government Minister Sonia Parag, who also spoke at the ceremony, mentioned that this year, the Local Government Ministry will roll out an initiative to equip each NDC with a compactor garbage truck.
