Police Force to establish Oil & Gas, Tourism Units

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) will establish two new specialized units—an Oil and Gas Unit and a Tourism Unit—as part of its strategic development for the period 2025–2026.

This announcement was made by Police Commissioner Clifton Hicken on Wednesday while addressing senior officers at the annual conference held at the Officers’ Mess, Eve Leary. The conference was conducted under the theme “Building a Resilient and Contemporary Police Force: Strengthening Accountability, Innovation, and Partnership for Safer Communities.”

Hicken emphasised the GPF’s commitment to modernisation and efficiency, noting that the new units will enhance the force’s ability to manage security concerns in Guyana’s rapidly evolving economic landscape.

Additionally, the Commissioner revealed plans to establish a specialised Artificial Intelligence (AI) Unit as part of the force’s ongoing digitalisation and upgrade efforts. The recently launched Aviation Unit is also set to receive further investment and support.

Hicken further highlighted several other specialised units aimed at strengthening law enforcement and expanding the GPF’s operational reach. These include the Crime and Intelligence Units, the Mountain Branch, Marine, Canine, Immigration, and Divisional-Based Information Management Units.

The Commissioner reaffirmed that these initiatives align with the objectives outlined in the GPF’s 2022–2026 strategic plan, ensuring that the force remains adaptive and responsive to national security needs.
