President Ali to outline bold vision for Guyana’s future in Independence address

As Guyana prepares to celebrate its 59th year of independence on Monday, President Dr Irfaan Ali will deliver a national address from Albion, Region Six—signaling a commitment to inclusivity and national unity in commemorating one of the country’s most significant milestones.

This year’s independence anniversary comes amid a period of dynamic transformation for the country, fuelled by robust economic growth and major investments in infrastructure. The government has promised celebrations that will be both festive and forward-looking, blending cultural pride with a comprehensive outline of its development roadmap.

“Every independence celebration is an important milestone in our country’s relatively short independent history,” said Vice President and General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Dr Bharrat Jagdeo, during a press conference on Thursday. “It allows us an opportunity to speak to the people of our country, not only about past challenges, but also about where our country is headed.”

Dr Jagdeo previewed key themes expected in the President’s address, emphasising that the government will unveil a vision of inclusive, broad-based economic growth designed to benefit all citizens. He noted that the administration’s priorities extend far beyond economic metrics to include human development, equity, and social progress.

“As we approach these independence celebrations, you’re going to hear about our vision to support a massive economic expansion in the future—but not just economic expansion—broad-based economic expansion that will then yield the benefits that would allow us to support the development needs of our people,” he explained.

That development agenda, Dr Jagdeo said, includes bold targets for homeownership, the modernisation of education and healthcare systems, and enhanced social welfare provisions.

“You’re going to hear about our plans for the near term—about creating a world-class education and health care for the people of this country—for children, but also for the adults,” he added. “You’re going to hear about our plans for the expansion of benefits and welfare to the children of the country, to the elderly and disabled—not just in the President’s speech, but in a lot of the other speeches that you will hear from ministers as they go around the country.”

In keeping with a tradition established by the current administration, the celebration will not only be centred in the capital but will also include ministerial outreach in communities nationwide. This approach reinforces the government’s commitment to inclusion, representation, and unity—values that underpin the nation’s ongoing development efforts.

Guyana’s 59th Independence celebrations are expected to draw large crowds, with a full line-up of cultural performances, fireworks, and community events scheduled throughout the weekend and into Monday. The occasion offers a chance for national reflection and celebration as the country continues to assert itself on the regional and global stage.

Dr Jagdeo concluded with a heartfelt message to citizens: “I want to, in advance, wish all our people a Happy Independence anniversary, and I hope that they use the opportunity for introspection. It’s not just cliché… but really dig into the substance of how far we have come, and the difficult path that we walked in these short years—or relatively short years—as a newly independent country.”

As the Golden Arrowhead flies high across Guyana, Monday’s address from Albion promises to be more than ceremonial—it will be a blueprint for a nation boldly stepping into its future.
