Some 80 fisherfolk from Region Six are set to benefit from the development of brackish water shrimp ponds.

During an engagement today, Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha met with fisherfolk from Sheet Anchor/Fort Ordinance, where he announced the project.

Mustapha explained that the project, which is expected to commence next month, aims to supplement the fisherfolk’s income. He further explained that the Ministry of Agriculture will collaborate with the fisherfolk in the area to develop the ponds.

This, he noted, is an example of diversifying the industry and creating new income streams—not only to generate a source of income but also to provide additional means of livelihood for citizens. It is part of the government’s plans to diversify the economy as it continues to expand.

Brackish water shrimp production was introduced in Guyana a few years ago due to the global issue of low fish catches that had impacted the local fisheries industry.

President Irfaan Ali highlighted that aquaculture is a crucial component of the agriculture sector, and his administration is committed to ensuring its success.

Aquaculture refers to the rearing, breeding, and harvesting of aquatic species, both animals and plants, in environments such as oceans, lakes, rivers, ponds, and streams.
