Patient dies after alleged assault at New Amsterdam Psychiatric Hospital

A 52‑year‑old male patient of the New Amsterdam Psychiatric Hospital has died following an alleged assault by another patient while in the facility’s acute room, sources confirmed.

The deceased has been identified as Ravinand Yudeshwar Bishram, a male of East‑Indian descent who had been a resident patient at the psychiatric institution for approximately five years.

The New Amsterdam Psychiatric Hospital, located in Fort Canje, Berbice, serves as one of the main mental health institutions in Guyana and houses patients with a range of complex psychiatric conditions.

Incidents of violent interactions among patients have occurred in the past.
