The Iwokrama River Lodge has retained its Good Travel Seal Certification following a recent assessment under the Good Travel Experiences framework of the Good Travel Alliance.
The certification recognises tourism operations that deliver measurable benefits to local communities while minimising impacts on nature, culture and the climate. Iwokrama said the renewal affirms the lodge’s continued commitment to responsible, community-centred and environmentally sustainable tourism.
The Iwokrama River Lodge is regarded as one of Guyana’s leading examples of tourism that integrates conservation, community livelihoods and visitor experiences within a protected rainforest landscape. The certification provides third-party validation that the lodge’s operations align with internationally recognised standards for sustainable tourism and destination stewardship.
Iwokrama Chief Executive Officer Dane Gobin said the renewal reflects the quality of service consistently delivered by the lodge and credited staff and community partners for the achievement. He also noted plans for 2026, including closer collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism to promote community-based tourism products in the North Rupununi.
The Good Travel Experience assessment evaluates tourism activities against criteria including local economic contribution, cultural respect, environmental responsibility and climate-conscious operations. Iwokrama said the lodge met these standards through the employment of local staff, partnerships with community enterprises, support for conservation initiatives and low-impact tourism practices.
Tourism revenues from the lodge contribute directly to Iwokrama’s broader conservation and research mandate, including forest conservation, biodiversity monitoring and community engagement programmes.
Iwokrama thanked the Good Travel Alliance, its community partners, the North Rupununi District Development Board and the Guyana Tourism Authority for their continued support.
