A Berbice family is demanding answers following the deaths of 36-year-old Latoya Griffith and her newborn baby at the New Amsterdam Regional Hospital last week.

Griffith, a mother of three from Gibraltar, Corentyne, died on Thursday after being admitted earlier in the week. Her mother, Virginia Jones, told Ignite News that Griffith had attended a routine clinic visit on Tuesday before being admitted to the maternity ward. Jones last saw her daughter alive during a visit on Thursday.

“When I about to leave she call, mommy and said the nurse want to talk to me and the nurse say it’s a 50-50 case, she have to go to theatre, and when I coming back in the afternoon I will have to walk with some tea for her, soon as I left, things get worse with my daughter. We get a message she need blood. When we reach there, they say she have to go to town. It was so much confusion… mix up, mix up…they say she pass,” the mother related.

Griffith’s baby died the following day, deepening the family’s grief.

“To my opinion, like is when me daughter dead, then they take over the baby, because the baby wasn’t breathing anymore…well at least I need justice for my daughter, she get kids, she have a family, who is going to take care of them. Me daughter always say, ‘Mommy, I will take care of you.’ Now look what happen, before my daughter bury me, I have to bury she,” she said.

Health officials have confirmed that an investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding both deaths.
