Minister Persaud addresses stakeholders at the consultation on Saturday

Intervention to curb bullying and violence in schools must begin at home and continue throughout the school environment, Human Services and Social Security Minister Dr. Vindhya Persaud said on Saturday.

Persaud spoke at a national public consultation on “Anti-Violence and Anti-Bullying in Schools” at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre, joined by her Cabinet colleagues, Education Minister Sonia Parag and Home Affairs Minister Oneidge Walrond.

She highlighted programmes implemented by her ministry through the Childcare and Protection Agency (CPA), the Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Policy Unit, and the Family Enhancement Services Section, which she said play vital roles in addressing bullying and related forms of violence.

“For the last three years, we’ve been working in a coordinated and structured way, going into schools, engaging with students and teachers, and carefully examining behaviours to understand their root causes so that we can respond effectively,” Persaud said.

The ministry has developed a National Anti-Bullying Policy for Schools, copies of which Persaud presented to her Cabinet colleagues.

The consultation provided a platform for teachers, parents, students and policymakers to share experiences, offer insights, and make recommendations as the Ministry of Education advances its broader initiative to tackle bullying across the education system.

Persaud said combating bullying requires a multi-agency and community-driven approach, stressing that effective intervention “must begin at home and continue throughout the school environment.”

The event, hosted by the Ministry of Education, is part of a series of national engagements aimed at fostering safer and more inclusive learning spaces for students.
