Cricketers in Region One will have greater opportunities to access organised competitions, coaching and talent identification programmes following the formal integration of the Barima/Waini Cricket Association into the Essequibo Cricket Board’s administrative structure.
The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) announced the development after a constitutional amendment was approved at a special general meeting of the Essequibo Cricket Board in October 2026, formally recognising Barima/Waini within its framework under the Guyana Cricket Administration Act of 2014.
The move establishes an official administrative link for cricket in the hinterland region, creating a clearer pathway for players, clubs and communities to participate in the wider Essequibo and national cricket systems.
GCB said efforts to develop cricket in Region One began in 2021, following the election of its current administration under President Bissoondyal Singh. Since then, several players from the region have progressed through the Essequibo cricket system to represent Essequibo and Guyana.
Among them is Alia Henry, who gained admission to the West Indies Under-19 cricket camp. Other emerging players include Yonette Welcome, Anastasia Valenzuela, Shenesa Thomas, Katie Blake and Darwin Joseph.
The Barima/Waini Cricket Association, chaired by Sherlon Rodrigues, has 20 affiliated clubs, providing a foundation for expanding grassroots and youth cricket.
Its executive includes Vice-Chairman Rich Skinner, Secretary Earl Doningo, Treasurer Letesha Rose Benn and Assistant Secretary/Treasurer Earl Richards.
The GCB credited Essequibo Cricket Board President Deleep Singh and both associations’ executives and clubs for advancing the integration, describing it as an important step towards a more inclusive national cricket structure.
