The relationship between Guyana and the United States is an equal partnership with no dominance, U.S. Ambassador to Guyana Nicole D. Theriot said on Friday.

Theriot spoke on the sidelines of the relaunch of fashion designer Sonia Noel's Love Revolution, amid public discussion of the relationship following remarks that described it in terms of force and dominance.

"It's a partnership. It's 50/50. Absolutely. There is no dominance. There is. It is very, very much a partnership," she said. Both countries benefited from the cooperation, she added.

She welcomed the signing of a new defence agreement between the U.S. Department of War and the Guyana Government as another step towards strengthening bilateral relations.

"I think it's just another step in us deepening our partnership and letting Guyana know that security cooperation between the US and Guyana is incredibly important to us, and that you remain a partner in ally," she said.

Theriot said she had helped with the wording of the agreement but preferred not to discuss its provisions until she had reviewed the document again.

Beyond government-to-government ties, she said the U.S. Embassy placed considerable importance on engaging ordinary Guyanese. Travelling the country and meeting people had helped her understand their needs and challenges, she said.

The ambassador also announced plans to work with the Women's Chamber of Commerce and Industry on a "Dress for Success" initiative to help women entering the workforce obtain appropriate clothing for job interviews and new employment. She said it was intended to build confidence and help women feel they belong in professional environments.

The embassy hopes to hold the event during the 14 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.
