Expanded military training and information sharing between Guyana and Brazil are under discussion as both countries seek to protect their shared border and address regional security challenges.

The talks were held on Friday at Base Camp Ayanganna, where Chief of Defence Staff Brigadier Omar Khan, MSS, met a Brazilian delegation led by Amazon Military Commander General Luiz Gonzaga Viana Filho.

Brigadier Khan described the discussions as productive and said continued engagement between the two forces was important to addressing shared challenges. He said instability elsewhere in the hemisphere could have wider regional implications, making sustained dialogue essential to informed strategic planning and decision-making.

He also acknowledged Brazil's longstanding contribution to Guyana Defence Force (GDF) training and professional development since Independence. Building on that history, both sides considered widening training beyond infantry and jungle warfare to include officer development and specialised courses.

General Viana Filho welcomed closer engagement and encouraged continued information sharing and further talks on capacity building. Mountain warfare training was among the opportunities to be pursued. He also invited Brigadier Khan to visit the Amazon Military Command Headquarters.

Discussions centred on shared defence and security concerns, information exchange and ways to develop military capabilities. The Brazilian delegation also received a security briefing.

The delegation included 1st Jungle Infantry Brigade Commander Brigadier General Roberto Pereira Angrizani; Operation Catrimani Deputy Commander Brigadier General Klauber Rogerio Candian; and Assistant to the Commander of the Amazon Military Command Colonel Bastos Costa. Their operational experience in Brazil's Amazon region informed talks on border security, military capabilities and closer cooperation.

Brigadier Khan was joined by Colonel General Staff Colonel Kenlloyd Roberts, MSM; Task Force Commander Captain (CG) Vernon Burnett; Adjutant General Colonel Lloyd Souvenir, MEM; Colonel Administration and Quartering Commander Roger Nurse, MEM; Guyana National Reserve Commandant Lieutenant Colonel Drumson Mc Caulay; Inspector General Lieutenant Colonel Nastasha Stanford-Francis, MEM; and other senior GDF officers.

At the start of the visit, 3 Infantry Battalion Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Jaime Castello and his team received the delegation at the Takutu River Bridge. The bridge links Lethem in Guyana with Bonfim in Brazil's Roraima State.
