Violence of any kind, particularly against a child, is a grave spiritual transgression and a complete violation of every core Hindu value, the Guyana Pandits Council said.
In a statement on the alleged killing of six-year-old Orlando Jaikarran of Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice, the Council expressed grief and shock and extended condolences to his family, loved ones and the community.
It said it "categorically and unequivocally" rejects any notion, rumour or suggestion that the killing involved a religious sacrifice or sacred ritual.
The Council said any attempt to link the crime to Hindu rites or doctrines is false and misleading.
"Religious standing, titles, or sacred garments must never serve as a shield or excuse for criminal conduct," said the statement, signed by Guyana Pandits Council Head Pandit Rudra Sharma.
The Council also cautioned the public about individuals who misuse spiritual titles or claim divine powers to manipulate vulnerable people, sow division in families or give dangerous counsel. It urged citizens to stay vigilant and to distance themselves from fraudulent practitioners who exploit fear and superstition under the guise of religion.
The Council called on the Guyana Police Force and the judicial system to carry out a comprehensive investigation and to ensure that everyone responsible faces the full penalty under the law.
Orlando was reported missing on Thursday, October 15. His decomposed, headless body was found in a canal in West Coast Berbice on Tuesday. A post-mortem examination on Wednesday was inconclusive, according to Region Five Commander Senior Superintendent Lonsdale Whithrite. Police said the child's father and another male, reportedly a pujari, remain in custody as investigations continue.
