A barge carrying about 8,000 barrels of waste oil is now upright and stabilised after listing significantly at a private wharf on the East Bank of Demerara, authorities said.

The Civil Defence Commission (CDC) said the vessel's cargo remains intact. Responders deployed containment booms around the barge as a precaution to restrict the movement of any oil, and took corrective measures to stabilise it.

The CDC is coordinating the response with the Maritime Administration Department, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Guyana Energy Agency, the Guyana Fire Service, the Agriculture Ministry, the Fisheries Department and the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard.

The agencies continue to assess and monitor the situation, with personnel and resources mobilised for containment, recovery and environmental protection. The CDC said the situation remains stable and under control.
