More than 100 animals from six regions will go on show at the Second Annual Ruminant Expo on Sunday, at the Rising Sun Turf Club, Weldaad, West Coast Berbice.
The Guyana Livestock Development Authority (GLDA) said preparations are complete for the event, which opens at 11am under the theme "Advancing the Ruminant Revolution: Building a Sustainable Value Chain".
The GLDA said the Expo will bring together breeders, producers, entrepreneurs, prospective investors and members of the public to showcase advancements in the ruminant industry and promote knowledge exchange, sustainable production, investment and enterprise development.
The animals come from Regions Two, Three, Four, Five, Six and 10, reflecting increased participation by local breeders. Exhibitors will share practical experience, make business connections and engage prospective buyers, and live animals will be available for purchase.
Nelore will be among the cattle breeds on display. The GLDA said most featured breeds have climate-resilient traits and have benefited from breeding improvements aimed at meeting market demands.
In the livestock competition, 21 prizes are up for grabs. Regions Four and Five have recorded increased participation, while Region Three leads in the ovine and caprine categories. Region Four will seek to retain its cattle Grand Champion title.
The GLDA will also showcase its services in genetics, animal production and pasture development, along with those of the Animal Nutrition Laboratory. Technical teams will advise established producers, prospective farmers and entrepreneurs on livestock production and sector opportunities.
The programme will feature cheese production and other value-added products, intended to show farmers how to diversify income and expand local processing beyond the sale of live animals.
A Mutton Curry Competition will also be held. Defending champion Team GSA, representing the Guyana School of Agriculture, plans a more creative entry with bolder spices in its bid to retain the title.
The event will offer entertainment for all ages and free, secure parking. The West Berbice Sheep and Goat Association, which the GLDA described as Guyana's largest association of its kind, will provide food and refreshments.
