A man is in police custody in connection with a suspected arson that killed his common-law wife and her three-year-old son at David James Housing Scheme, Charity, Essequibo Coast.
The victims were identified as Donnett Alberts, 29, and Keron Latchman, three. Police have not established a motive.
Residents said they were unable to intervene in time because the building was already engulfed in flames when they arrived.
“We just heard and we came to see. We know nothing, but they recently built this house,” one resident told Ignite News.
Residents said the couple lived in an isolated, forested farming area.

A crew from the Central Fire Station responded to the scene. Firefighters were told that two people were inside the building. After extinguishing the fire, they found the skeletal remains of two people on a burnt-out bed.

The building, which measured about eight metres by seven metres, stood on two-metre-high columns and had a corrugated metal exterior.
The Guyana Fire Service classified the suspected cause of the fire as malicious. Police investigations are continuing.
