A 17-year-old construction worker died after being stabbed during a fight that followed a card game at Westminster, La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, on Sunday, police said.
Police identified the teenager as Akeem Bannister, also called "Boy", of Westminster. A 26-year-old construction worker from the same area was also wounded.
Police in Regional Division Three are investigating the alleged murder and the unlawful wounding. The incident occurred between 3:30pm and 3:55pm on Sunday, near a supermarket.
Preliminary investigations indicate that an argument after a card game led to a confrontation between the 26-year-old and a 30-year-old male vendor of the area.
Police said the 26-year-old allegedly armed himself with a cutlass and chopped the vendor on his right hand. The vendor then reportedly drew a knife, and the two scuffled, during which the 26-year-old was injured.
Bannister then became involved, and the vendor allegedly stabbed him three times in the lower limbs, police said.
Both men were taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where Bannister died while receiving treatment.
Police said CCTV footage from the area has been obtained and is being reviewed. The 30-year-old suspect has not been apprehended, and investigations are continuing.
