Police patrols stationed around several Georgetown hotels over recent weeks were deployed to protect visiting officials and international conference delegates, according to the Guyana Police Force.

In a statement clarifying its presence at Aiden by Best Western, the Marriott Hotel and the Pegasus Hotel, the Force said the deployments formed part of security arrangements for three international events hosted in Guyana.

It identified those events as the INTERPOL Conference, the Regional Accidents and Incidents Conference, and the Caribbean Tourism Organization Conference.

According to police, the hotels accommodated visiting dignitaries, foreign officials and delegates attending the events over the preceding three weeks.

The Force said its security procedures provide for arrangements both inside designated accommodation facilities and around their outer perimeters. Police patrols and perimeter security details were deployed as part of those measures.

“Police patrols and perimeter security details were deployed around these hotels as part of established security arrangements to safeguard visiting officials, hotel guests and the general public,” the statement said.

The Force maintained that the deployments were consistent with its responsibility to protect international visitors and state guests, and were conducted under established national security protocols.

However, the statement did not identify the specific concern or allegation that prompted the clarification. It also did not state how many officers were assigned to the hotels or whether the deployments have ended.
