Families in Charity, Region Two, woke to inches of floodwater inside their homes on Wednesday after heavy rains flooded sections of the community.

Charity Extension Scheme resident Gideon Ramsammy told Ignite News that water began entering his home between 4am and 5am, and his family of eight moved most of their belongings to higher ground to prevent further damage. He described the situation as difficult and said the family had to act quickly as the water rose.

Another resident, Elton McCalmont of Lot P, Amazon Street, Charity, estimated his losses at more than $800,000. He said floodwaters damaged two refrigerators, a washing machine, poultry pens and his flower and vegetable gardens.

McCalmont said it was the fourth time he had experienced flooding of this nature and expressed concern over the repeated damage to his property and livelihood.
Regional Chairman Devin Mohan, Regional Vice Chairman Humace Oodit and engineers visited the affected areas to assess the situation and coordinate efforts to reduce the water.

“We are mobilising additional pumps, and the entire technical team is on the ground actively monitoring the situation and coordinating efforts to reduce the floodwaters,” the regional response team said in a statement.

Efforts to lower water levels continue. Affected families, particularly those who have endured repeated flooding, now face the task of cleaning their homes and replacing damaged belongings.
