The men and women who run towards danger when others escape it were saluted on Monday, as the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) celebrated its 69th anniversary with a march through Georgetown.
Home Affairs Minister Oneidge Walrond, who joined the march, said: "Behind every uniform is someone prepared to run towards danger when others are trying to escape it. That is the responsibility our firefighters carry every day."
She added: "As we mark 69 years, I salute the men and women, past and present, who have carried that responsibility with pride."
GFS Chief Fire Officer Gregory Wickham also paid tribute to generations of firefighters, particularly those who served after the Service's separation from the Guyana Police Force on October 12, 1957.
"We thank those who would have laid down their lives who would have faced each challenge as an opportunity to show the world that we are here and we care," Wickham said.
He extended his appreciation to current ranks, including divisional and station officers, firefighters, recruits, cadet officers and civilian staff.
Wickham singled out emergency medical technicians, saying the response to traumatic incidents such as gunshot wounds, lacerations and crush injuries demanded considerable stamina, grit and energy.
He also reaffirmed the Service's commitment to citizens and visitors, citing its motto, "service with confidence", and its operational principle, "when in doubt, you turn out". Firefighters, he noted, often leave their loved ones behind to answer emergency calls.
Looking ahead, Wickham highlighted the Government's acquisition of additional equipment, including fire tenders, fire boats and Bronto Skylift aerial platforms for fighting fires in high-rise buildings.
"As Guyana develops and the Government of Guyana continue to contribute and support the Guyana Fire Service through acquiring of new assets, more assets, we will be better able to serve the people of this dear nation of ours," Wickham said.
