Venezuela’s interim President Delcy Rodríguez has authorised Starlink, the satellite internet service operated by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, to operate in the country, marking a significant development for its telecommunications sector amid a historically strained relationship with the United States.

According to a Venezuelan government statement issued on Friday, the authorisation forms part of an agreement with the US company, Reuters stated.

Starlink uses a network of satellites to provide internet connectivity, including in remote areas where traditional telecommunications infrastructure is limited. Its entry could expand internet access, increase competition and create pressure on existing providers to improve service quality and coverage.

The move also carries potential political and economic significance. Venezuela and the United States have endured years of diplomatic tensions, sanctions and disputes over governance.

Authorising a major US technology company could signal a pragmatic approach to connectivity and economic cooperation.
