Guyana’s Hospitality and Tourism Training Institute at Port Mourant, Berbice, is now 80 per cent complete and remains on track for completion by the end of 2026. , marking a significant step towards strengthening the country’s tourism and hospitality workforce.

The Government’s information department said Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Susan Rodrigues provided the update following discussions with Minister of Education, Sonia Parag, and representatives of Niagara College in Canada, which is supporting the development of the institute’s curriculum.

Once operational, the institute is expected to become a key centre for specialised training, equipping Guyanese with the practical skills, technical knowledge and customer service expertise needed to excel in the growing hospitality and tourism industry.

From hotels and resorts to restaurants and other tourism-related businesses, the programmes will be designed to meet industry demands and align with international standards, helping to prepare graduates for a competitive and evolving job market.

Niagara College’s involvement is expected to further strengthen the quality of training by incorporating international best practices and industry-relevant approaches into the curriculum.

The development comes as Guyana continues to expand its tourism offerings, with new hotels and other tourism infrastructure creating greater demand for a skilled and professional workforce.

Beyond addressing existing skills gaps, the institute is expected to open new doors for young Guyanese entering the workforce and for existing hospitality professionals seeking to upgrade their qualifications.

With construction advancing steadily, work is also continuing on the academic programmes and training arrangements needed to support the institute’s operations.

The project represents an important investment in local talent, ensuring that as Guyana’s tourism sector grows, more Guyanese are equipped to benefit from the opportunities it creates.
