Guyana will host the 2028 South American Powerlifting Federation (FESUPO) Championships for the first time, the federation announced at the close of its 2026 Congress.

FESUPO Secretary General Jose Luis Inguanti confirmed the decision after delegates elected a new executive, returning Julio Conrado of Brazil to the presidency. International Powerlifting Federation Vice President Dietmar Wolf attended.

Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPLF) President Franklin Wilson and Vice President Edwin Gordon Spencer represented Guyana at the congress and called the announcement a landmark for the sport and the country.

Wilson said the 2026 championships already delivered gains, marking the first time Guyana facilitated the training of two locally based coaches, including one woman.
"Our athletes at this year's edition continue to keep the tradition of medalling at this international level intact, and we have now been confirmed as the official host for the 2028 edition of the championships after Colombia hosts in 2027," Wilson said.

He added that the 2028 championships would draw athletes from Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Uruguay, Suriname, Peru, Colombia and Chile to compete against the home team.

"We are looking forward to this historic moment, and as a federation we are ecstatic to make our contribution to the sports tourism landscape in Guyana, and to also answer the challenge of President Dr Irfaan Ali to bring more international events to Guyana," Wilson said.

Inguanti said: "Thank you for collaborating with FESUPO on organising the 2028 championship. We are confident that we will have a great competition, and we will work together to achieve that."

Conrado also expressed confidence Guyana would host a successful championship. The federation's executive is expected to meet shortly to begin planning for the event.
