The Shipping Association of Guyana (SAG) is calling for continued improvements in port operations and cargo-handling processes as rising economic activity increases demands on the country’s shipping and logistics sector.

A statement from the Association said that the call came during a meeting between its Chairman Dr. Komal Singh, representatives of shipping lines operating in Guyana and Senior Minister in the Office of the President with Responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni K. Singh.

The discussions focused on operational challenges facing the shipping industry and ways Government and private-sector stakeholders can work together to improve port efficiency and strengthen the competitiveness of Guyana’s trade and logistics network.

SAG noted that Guyana’s continued economic expansion has been accompanied by increased commercial activity and imports, creating new demands on the systems and processes supporting the movement of cargo through the country’s ports.

The Association emphasized the need for stronger coordination, streamlined procedures and greater responsiveness across the sector as trade volumes continue to grow.

“…Guyana’s economy is experiencing significant growth, which is having a direct and positive impact on the shipping industry. Our objective is to work collaboratively with Government to ensure that Guyana’s shipping and trade systems continue to keep pace with the country’s rapid economic growth,” the SAG chairman said.

It was noted that Minister Singh acknowledged the shipping industry’s role in facilitating trade and supporting economic development, while reaffirming Government’s commitment to addressing challenges affecting the sector.

“We remain committed to working collaboratively with the sector to improve efficiency and ensure that our systems continue to respond to the needs of a rapidly growing economy,” the Minister said.
