Eighteen-year-old Rosanna Thomas of Campbelltown, Mahdia, has graduated as the top student of her recruit course at the Guyana Police Force Academy.

Thomas delivered the valedictory address at the academy’s Passing-Out Parade on Friday, September 18, marking a proud moment for her family and community in Region Eight.

Reflecting on the demands of the programme, Thomas told her fellow graduates that completing the course required discipline, sacrifice and determination.

“There were days when we were tired, challenged and perhaps even questioned ourselves. But we persevered,” she said.

Thomas, who is Amerindian, also spoke proudly about her heritage. She said her background represents more than where she came from—it will help shape the way she serves Guyana.

As the recruits prepared to begin their policing careers, Thomas reminded them that wearing a uniform brings authority and responsibility.

“Our uniform may give us authority, but it is our character that will determine how that authority is used,” she said.

She urged the new officers to act with integrity, treat people with respect and enforce the law fairly.

Thomas also reminded them that passing out from the academy was not the end of their journey. It marked the beginning of their responsibility to protect vulnerable citizens and serve without fear, favour, affection or ill will.

She thanked the academy’s instructors and the relatives who supported the recruits throughout their training.

Thomas ended her address with a simple message to her fellow graduates:

“May we go forward with courage, serve with integrity and protect with heart.”
