Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret'd) Mark Phillips has identified renewable energy, smart infrastructure, agricultural technology and marine science among new areas for expanded cooperation between Guyana and China.
He made the remarks on Thursday evening at a reception hosted by the Embassy of the People's Republic of China to commemorate China's National Day and the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.
Phillips said the two countries have built a relationship spanning more than five decades, with room for further collaboration aligned with both nations' development priorities.
He congratulated President Xi Jinping, the Government and people of China on behalf of the Government and people of Guyana, noting that the occasion coincides with Guyana's 60th anniversary of Independence and 54 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Reflecting on existing ties, Phillips pointed to cooperation in infrastructure, healthcare, agriculture, education, transportation and human resource development — citing the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge, built by China Railway Construction Corporation International, and the six regional hospitals project as practical examples. He also acknowledged the contributions of Chinese medical teams to Guyana over the years.
Guyana's continued economic diversification creates scope for increased trade and commercial engagement with China, he said, adding that opportunities also exist for greater people-to-people exchanges through the Chinese Government Scholarship Programme and other training and capacity-building initiatives.
Looking ahead, Phillips pointed to sustainable urban development, modern transportation and urban planning, and agriculture and food processing as further areas for collaboration, alongside fisheries, aquaculture and environmental protection — engagement he said could extend to institutions, universities, enterprises and technical partners in both countries.
"The question before us is not simply what we have achieved together, but what more we can accomplish together," Phillips said, adding that the existing relationship provides a strong foundation for both countries to pursue new opportunities for cooperation and mutual benefit.
"As China marks the 77th Anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, Guyana looks forward with confidence to working alongside China to build a future that is more prosperous, more resilient, more sustainable, and more inclusive," he said.
