Citibank has officially established a representative office in Guyana, marking the first time an international bank has opened such an office in the country.

Speaking at the official opening on Monday, US Ambassador to Guyana Nicole Theriot said Citibank's presence reflects confidence in Guyana's economic trajectory.

"With this opening, Citi becomes the first international bank to establish a representative office in Guyana, a landmark achievement that speaks to the confidence local financial institutions have in Guyana's economic trajectory," Theriot said.

The representative office is expected to help connect Guyanese businesses with international capital, support investment, facilitate trade and bring global financial expertise to the country's expanding private sector. Theriot said the United States remains committed to supporting Guyana's economic development and strengthening commercial ties between the two countries.

President Dr Irfaan Ali, speaking at the opening, said Citibank's presence opens a door between Guyana and the international financial architecture, allowing capital to flow, ideas to travel and partnerships to be built. He said Citibank's decision to establish a presence here sends a signal about how Guyana is increasingly being viewed by the international financial community.

Headquartered in New York, Citibank is a global financial institution whose clients include 85 per cent of Fortune 500 companies.

The establishment of the representative office further positions Guyana for deeper engagement with international financial markets and new opportunities for investment and commercial partnerships.
