India appoints Chinmoy Naik as next High Commissioner to Guyana

Deputy High Commissioner Chinmoy Naik

Deputy High Commissioner Chinmoy Naik, currently serving at the High Commission of India in Ottawa, has been appointed as the next High Commissioner of India to the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, India’s Ministry of External Affairs said on Thursday.

Naik, a 2004-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, is expected to take up the assignment shortly, the ministry said in a statement.
His appointment comes against the backdrop of a relationship that stretches back six decades, to when India and Guyana first established diplomatic ties in 1966.

That bond has since been reinforced by the presence of a substantial Indo-Guyanese community, which today accounts for nearly 40 per cent of Guyana’s population, and by institutional mechanisms such as the Indo-Guyana Joint Commission, formed in 1977 to steer economic and trade cooperation.

Over the years, the partnership has broadened well beyond its historical roots, extending into hydrocarbons, renewable energy, agriculture, healthcare, infrastructure and defence — the latter underscored by India’s supply of Dornier 228 aircraft. Trade, too, has gathered pace, with Indian exports to Guyana reaching $40.9 million in March 2026 alone.

Ties were given further momentum by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 2024 visit to Georgetown, the first by an Indian premier in 56 years, and were marked with renewed warmth in August, when the two nations celebrated 60 years of diplomatic relations.
