Plans are underway to re-establish a transmission link between Linden and the coast, potentially giving Linden access to electricity from the national grid while allowing power to flow in the opposite direction.

Chief Executive Officer of the Hinterland Electrification Company Inc (HECI) Horace Williams disclosed this during a recent town hall meeting of the Linden Mayor and Town Council.

He said the link is part of a strategy to strengthen Linden’s electricity system, alongside additional generation, solar power and battery storage.

“There is a plan to link Linden with the coast so that we could have power transmitting back and forth between the two areas,” Williams said.

The proposed connection would provide another source of electricity for Linden, potentially reducing the community’s reliance on its existing generation capacity during periods of high demand or disruptions.

Williams stressed, however, that the connection is not intended to mean Linden’s existing generation facilities would become unnecessary.

He said diesel generation would remain part of the system, with battery storage expected to support peak demand and solar generation being added as part of efforts to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

The planned link is being pursued as Linden grapples with rising electricity demand.
