Forty young people from eight communities will receive vocational training, mentoring and possible job-placement support under a new $6.5 million skills programme.

The 12-month Youth Skills Empowerment Initiative was launched on Friday by Hands United for Humanity, with funding from the Guyana UK Social Development Association.

Beginning in late September, the programme will target young people from Agricola, Buxton, Diamond, Grove, Parfait Harmony, Plaisance, Sophia and surrounding communities.

Training will cover computer skills, cosmetology and hairdressing, floral design, makeup artistry, nail technology, cake making and decorating, elderly care and childcare.

Participants will also receive lessons in English, mathematics, communication and small-business management, along with transportation support, meal allowances and follow-up mentoring.

Hands United for Humanity Executive Member Debbie Hopkinson said the aim is to equip participants with more than certificates.

“The aim is to have young people leave the programme with more than a certificate,” she said, pointing to the practical skills, confidence and pathways to employment the training is expected to provide.

Participants interested in entrepreneurship will also receive support to explore small-business opportunities, while others could benefit from job-placement assistance.

Hopkinson said the programme’s true success will be measured by what participants achieve after completing their training.

“The substance of YSEI will ultimately be measured not simply by how many people complete the training, but by what happens next—the jobs secured [and] businesses created,” she said.
