Two Indonesian nationals died and four other foreign nationals were injured in a collision involving a truck and two minibuses on the Timehri Public Road, East Bank Demerara, early Friday morning.
Police said the accident occurred at about 03:51hrs and involved motor lorry GAJ 3074, minibus BAH 6588 and minibus BAF 1135.
The deceased were identified as Edy Ansyori Sukri and Ikomang Tedy Arsa Bantara Putra, both occupants of minibus BAF 1135, who died at the scene. The four injured passengers were taken to the Diamond Regional Hospital, where they are receiving treatment.
Police said motor lorry GAJ 3074 was driven by a 36-year-old resident of Land of Canaan, minibus BAH 6588 by a 48-year-old resident of Lusignan, and minibus BAF 1135 by a 55-year-old resident of Crane Housing Scheme.
According to police, the lorry was proceeding south along the eastern driving lane of the road, reportedly at a fast rate of speed, when the driver allegedly swerved southwest and collided with minibus BAH 6588, which was proceeding north along the western driving lane. The lorry then collided with minibus BAF 1135, which was travelling behind BAH 6588.
All three vehicles were extensively damaged in the collisions, police said.
A Guyana Defence Force ambulance, accompanied by Emergency Medical Technicians, responded to the scene.
Police said checks were made for eyewitnesses and CCTV footage, but none was found. The scene and vehicles were photographed by a Crime Scene rank, while the vehicles were examined by a Licensing and Certifying Officer.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where they are awaiting post-mortem examinations.
Breathalyser tests conducted on all three drivers showed no trace of alcohol in their systems, police said.
The drivers remain in custody, assisting with the investigation.
Further investigations are ongoing and details will be provided as necessary.
