Parents across Guyana are making final preparations ahead of the new school term, as vendors stock up on uniforms, shoes, bags, stationery and other essentials with just days to go.
Ignite News visited busy shopping areas in Georgetown, including Regent Street, and spoke with parents and vendors about last-minute shopping.
“People just coming in a rush to get their stuff now. You know, the last minute shopping– pencils, socks, books. That’s about it,” said a vendor who identified himself only as Persaud.
Another vendor, Thandeka, said many parents had already completed their school shopping when the schools’ cash grants were distributed, though some were still picking up essentials on Friday.
“Most people already done do they’re school shopping already. So, right now basically just like last minute pick-ups, fineries and so. But so far, so good,” she said, commenting on the hustle and bustle.
Parent Charles said budgeting was key to his last-minute shopping.
“Well last minute shopping is working out quite fine. We’re not finding some stuff but we’re getting there. A lot of walking because the sun is kind of hot and you can’t really traverse with the vehicle. We’re putting ourselves on a budget so whatever we have to get we are just trying to get it at a minimum cost,” he said.
Parent Fenton Williams said rising prices had made the exercise difficult, but he was doing what was necessary to stock up on supplies.
“It’s very hectic because the prices of all the items have gone up, and during a time like now when school should be reopening most of the vendors will up their prices. As we all know it’s competitive on the market. Nevertheless, as parents we still have to try to see how we can meets ends so that our children can be comfortable to return to school on Monday,” he said.
The back-to-school rush has brought increased activity to shopping areas, as families work to ensure their children are equipped for the start of classes.
As shopping heads into the weekend, vendors said they remain hopeful for increased sales, while parents said they are hoping to complete their shopping checklists.
