Petra Organisation Director Troy Mendonca has announced his intention to contest the presidency of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF), setting up a potential challenge to long-serving incumbent Wayne Forde more than a year before elections are due.
The announcement puts Forde, who has held the GFF presidency since 2015 and could seek at least two further terms, under fresh scrutiny. He has not confirmed his intentions in recent months, despite stating in a 2023 article that he would not seek re-election.
Outlining his platform, Mendonca said his candidacy would be built on transparency and long-term planning.
“I firmly believe that Guyanese football deserves our very best. My campaign will therefore be grounded in moving football forward through strategic planning, accountability, inclusion and attainable and sustainable decisions,” Mendonca said.
Central to that platform, he said, is a renewed focus on nurturing talent at every level of the game.
“I think our focus will be investing in player development from the grass root to the senior level so that every player can reach their full potential,” he said.
Beyond player development, Mendonca, speaking at a recent press briefing, said his plans also extend to strengthening the game’s grassroots infrastructure through support for clubs and regional associations.
Against this backdrop, pundits have suggested a change in leadership could reinvigorate Guyana’s football administration ahead of the next electoral cycle.
